A common Catholic question
Why do Catholics ask Mary to pray for us?
It is not because Mary replaces Jesus. She never does. We ask for her prayers because she belongs completely to Christ, points us to Christ, and teaches us to keep saying yes to Christ.
Mary’s clearest instruction still points straight to Jesus:“Do whatever he tells you.”John 2:5
The short answer
We are asking for intercession, not worship.
If I ask you to pray for me, I am not putting you in place of Jesus. I am asking another member of the Body of Christ to stand with me in prayer. Catholics believe the saints are alive in Christ, so we ask them to pray with us, too.
Mary’s intercession is not a rival path around Jesus. Every grace comes from Christ. Her prayers depend entirely on Him and lead us more deeply toward Him.
Why Mary?
Scripture gives her a unique place in the family of Jesus.
God chose her.
Mary did not appoint herself. God chose her to be the mother of His Son, and she answered with faith: “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Luke 1 →Scripture calls her blessed.
Elizabeth calls Mary “the mother of my Lord,” and Mary says that every generation will call her blessed—not because she replaces God, but because of what God has done for her.
Luke 1:43–49 →She brings our needs to Jesus.
At Cana, Mary notices the need, brings it to Jesus, and then directs everyone toward Him: “Do whatever he tells you.” That is still the pattern of authentic Marian devotion.
John 2:1–11 →She prays with the Church.
After the Ascension, Mary is found praying with the apostles as they await the Holy Spirit. She is not standing apart from the Church; she is praying in the heart of it.
Acts 1:14 →An important distinction
Honor is not the same thing as worship.
Worship belongs to God alone. Catholics honor Mary because God honored her with a singular role in the story of salvation. Any devotion that stops at Mary has missed the point. Mary always leads us to her Son.
Do Catholics worship Mary?
No. Catholics worship the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We love and honor Mary as the mother of Jesus and ask for her prayers.
Why not pray directly to Jesus?
We do—constantly. Asking Mary or any saint to pray for us adds to our prayer; it does not replace prayer to God.
Isn’t Jesus the one mediator?
Yes. Jesus alone reconciles humanity to the Father. The prayers Christians offer for one another share in His work; they do not compete with it. Mary’s intercession depends completely on Christ.
So what is the Rosary doing?
The Rosary keeps our attention on the life, ministry, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. We meditate on the Gospel with Mary and repeatedly ask her to “pray for us sinners.”
